Creating a Custom Field

It may take a few moments for the field list to load. Once it does you can click New at the top of the list to create a new field.

4. Give your field a Display Name and then click anywhere else on the form to automatically fill in the Name field.

5. Leave the Requirement Level at No Constraint and Auditing as Enabled as the Defaults.

6. Select the Type of Field

For more information on the types of fields this blog post from Hitachi Solutions gives a good description of each. http://blog.customereffective.com/blog/2013/05/data-types-available-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2011.html

7. In most cases you can leave the remaining fields to their defaulted positions.

If you've created a custom field with a single line of text type and saved, but then realized you need it to be a date, how do you change?

If you cannot change, how do you delete the custom field entirely if you need to then create a new custom field under the same name?

You cannot change the type once you have saved. To delete and start again you go back to the list of fields and select the field you want to remove. In the toolbar there is a black X icon for deleting. *NOTE be very careful with this as you only want to delete the field you made in error. Deleting system fields, even if you don't use them can potentially cause serious issues with your system.
